2026 General Election: What You Need to Know
With the June primary behind us, Newburgh's next trip to the polls is the 2026 General Election on Tuesday, November 3. Here's the calendar, the deadlines, and what Orange County voters need to know to be ready.
Key Dates
- October 19 — Change-of-address deadline (if you've moved within New York)
- October 24 — Last day to register to vote, and last day to apply for an absentee ballot by mail
- October 24 – November 1 — Early voting period (9 days)
- November 2 — Last day to apply for an absentee ballot in person at the Orange County Board of Elections
- November 3 — Election Day (polls open 6 AM – 9 PM)
The General Is Open to Everyone
Unlike June's closed primary, the November general election is open to every registered voter, regardless of party. If you registered as "no party" or with a third party and sat out the primary, this is your election too. All you need is to be registered by October 24.
Check Your Registration
Not sure if you're registered — or moved since June? It's a 30-second check at the NY State Voter Lookup. If you need to register or update your address, the deadline is October 24. New York lets you register three ways: online through the DMV, by mail, or in person at the Orange County Board of Elections in Goshen.

Early Voting
Orange County runs 8 early voting sites across the 9-day window from October 24 through November 1. You can vote at any of them — early voting is not assigned by address, so pick whichever site fits your schedule. (Election Day, November 3, is different — that one uses your assigned polling place.) The county publishes each day's hours in October; we'll post them on the early voting locations page as soon as they're set.
Election Day
On Election Day, November 3, you must vote at your assigned polling place. Polls are open 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Look up your assigned site at /polling-places by entering your address.
What's on the Ballot
The candidates for the general election are set once the primary results are certified. As soon as the Orange County Board of Elections finalizes the ballot, you'll be able to see every race — filtered to your address — on our ballot page. Check back this fall.
