Register · Newburgh

Register to vote. Takes 2 minutes.

The fastest way is online through the DMV — if you have a New York driver’s license, permit, or state ID, you can register from your phone in about two minutes. Already registered? Confirm your status first so you don’t lose 30 seconds at the polls.
Step 01

Are you eligible?

To register in New York, you must check every one of these boxes. Most adults who’ve lived in Newburgh for a month already qualify.
  • You'll be 18 or older by Election Day
  • You're a U.S. citizen
  • You've lived in New York State for at least 30 days before the election
  • You're not currently incarcerated for a felony conviction
Step 02

Three ways to register Pick one.

All three options are free and ask for the same basic info: name, address, date of birth, and a NY driver’s license / state ID number (or the last four of your Social Security number if you don’t have a NY ID).

Deadline: register at least 10 days before any election.
Step 03

When do you need to be registered by?

New York requires your application be received (not just postmarked) at least 10 days before Election Day. For the elections coming up in Newburgh:
  • Primary (Jun 23, 2026) — register by Jun 13
  • General (Nov 3, 2026) — register by Oct 24
Already registered but moved? The change-of-address deadline is even earlier — Jun 8 for the primary, Oct 19 for the general.
Step 04

Choose a party (primary voters only)

New York runs closed primaries — you can only vote in the primary of the party you’re registered with. The June 23 primary is for party members only; the November general election is open to everyone regardless of party. You can register as “no party” (sometimes called “blank” or “unaffiliated”) and still vote in November — you just won’t get a primary ballot in June. If you want to switch parties, the deadline is much earlier — typically several months before the next primary.
Party-change deadline is earlier than the registration deadline. Plan ahead.
Step 05

What happens after you register

The Orange County Board of Elections processes your application and adds you to the rolls. You’ll get a notice in the mail with your assigned Election Day polling place. The whole thing usually takes 1–3 weeks.A few weeks before an election, you can also look yourself up online to confirm your registration, party, and assigned polling location.
